Why are black people disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic?

  • Vitamin D helps protect against colds and flu, so might defend against COVID-19 too. Vitamin D is converted to its active form by the action of sunlight on the skin, which is impeded by having dark skin. So dark skinned people are therefore more affected by coronavirus.

  • The virus spreads more in dense urban areas, which are disproportionately populated by BAME people.
